It is interesting that something so old in form has managed much like prostitution to survive for centuries. It did not start with black and white and I am sure that it will not ever end. We continuously perpetuate the ideology whether we want to or not. I have had to learn how not to internalize the ignorance that is displayed on a regular basis especially with the current forms of media.
Just in the past month I've seen a prominent college athlete being called the N word through various social networks. A pair of young teens posting a distasteful rant about their feelings towards their black peers. I've witnessed a young girl being persecuted for writing a paper expressing her feelings about inequality within the school system. Just today, I read an article about a young black teen who was murdered by a neighborhood watch but there still has not been an arrest made.
It would be nice to think that if you just held your head to the ground and ignored the problem that it would just go away, but unfortunately that is not the case. In 2012, where our current president is of white and black heritage you would think that people would start letting this old ideology lay to rest. However, it seems to continue to thrive throughout the nation.
The funny thing is that on both sides we continue to teach generation after generation the division. In my opinion it is the division amongst our society that is eventually going to be one of our greatest downfalls. And not just specifically race.
My only hope is that folks in this society would just take the time to educate themselves before they make such generalized ideas about the people in it.
